EXPORT BAN OF RICE

On July 20, a prohibition on the export of non-basmati white rice was issued. This was done to increase domestic supply and control retail pricing during the impending holiday season. About 25% of all the rice exported from the country is non-basmati white rice.

"Export practise of non-basmati white rice (semi-milled or wholly processed rice, whether or not polished or glazed)...is revised from free to prohibited," the department general of foreign trade (DGFT) stated in a statement. More than 40% of the rice exported globally comes from India.

According to data analytics company Gro Intelligence, countries that are anticipated to be impacted by the embargo include African countries, Turkey, Syria, and Pakistan, all of whom are already dealing with severe food price inflation.
