The largest partnership for the ninth wicket in the World Cup was formed by Kapil and Syed Kirmani during this innings, an unbroken 126-run partnership for the ninth wicket.

The Indian team won this match, which was contested at Trentbridge Wells on June 18, 1983, by 31 runs. Team India lost five of its wickets quickly when batting first, going down for 17 runs, but Kapil continued to team up with the tail end batters, one after the other, and they eventually scored 266 with nine wickets lost in 60 overs. With the aid of 16 fours and six sixes, Kapil hit an unbeaten 175 off 138 balls, and Kirmani got an unbeaten 24 off 56 balls. Malinga had 56 runs scored in the game, while Mathews had an undefeated 77. The nine-wicket partnership set by Kapil-Kirmani during the Mahakumbh World Cup of Cricket is still standing.
