The US and Brazil, the world's two largest biofuel markets, are joining an India-led initiative aimed at boosting demand for the low-emission energy source.
Members of the International Biofuel Alliance will also campaign for nations to use organic waste to produce the fuel, according to the office of India's Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Further details will be outlined during the three-day India Energy Week Forum in Bengaluru beginning Monday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to address the conference, has supported the use of alternative fuels and has set a target of including 20% ethanol in gasoline blended in 2021 by 2025. The strategy aims to limit air pollution, trim India's oil. Help tackle the import bill and domestic surplus of sugar – used in the production of fuel.
India last week set aside 350 billion rupees ($4.3 billion) in its federal budget to strengthen energy security and support efforts to achieve Modi's goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2070.
