Tamil Nadu not helping NHAI? MK Stalin criticizes Nitin Gadkari for giving 'wrong impression'

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin writes to Nitin Gadkari on pathetic condition of roads, 'had to plan his journey by train'.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin in a letter to Union Road and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on February 11 complained about the dilapidated condition of the road from Chennai to Ranipet National Highway. According to Stalin, the condition of the road is so bad that he has had to make his recent trips to some areas by train.

The Union Minister's reply in Parliament to a specific request made by DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran in this regard was "very general" and "non-committal". Vital connectivity" from Chennai and its ports to industrial clusters at Kanchipuram, Vellore, Ranipet, Hosur and Krishnagiri.

“The condition of the road is so bad that I had to plan my recent trips to some districts by train. While our MP's request was very specific on this important road, we were disappointed by your reply, which was very general and non-committal," Stalin said.

Stalin further said that it was regrettable that Nitin Gadkari's response in Parliament gave the impression that the state administration was not cooperating with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

He also cited the initiatives taken by the Tamil Nadu government to help in the development of NHAI in the state. Overall, the Maduravoyal elevated expressway project from Chennai port has been given a new lease of life by providing whatever assistance is available, including royalty waiver, he said.

Stalin said important NHAI projects have got comparable concessions, which was never done before. According to him, the soil/gravel license period has been extended from three months to one year as a result of the request to the Center till September 5, 2022.

With the aim of overseeing land acquisition for highway construction, the Tamil Nadu Administrative Center has set up a special cell, Stalin said, adding that no important NHAI project has been delayed due to lack of such permissions.

In addition, the progress of land acquisition and borrowing is regularly monitored by District Collectors at the level of Chief Secretary. He said that other demands of waiving off material cost, royalty and seignorage fees in lieu of giving the borrowed land at no cost are also being considered.
