Clients of SBI Alert: Online fraud and cybercrime charges are consistently rising in the country, which is also rapidly digitising. In this series, instances of fraud using mobile devices' QR codes have also recently come to light.

The largest public sector bank in the nation, SBI (State Bank of India), has warned its 44 crore clients about the rising occurrences of QR code fraud.

The bank has advised against scanning QR codes you receive from anyone, not even accidentally. By doing this, you run the risk of eventually being broke and having your bank account emptied of funds.

Bank provided details
Using tweets, SBI has informed its millions of consumers. You do not need to scan the QR code to collect money, the bank stated in a tweet. Every time you send a UPI payment, keep the safety advice in mind.

How is QR code fraud committed?
According to SBI, the QR code is only ever used to send payments—never to receive them. If you ever receive a letter or mail asking you to scan a QR code in order to obtain payment in such a scenario, do not, not even accidentally, do so. Your account can become empty as a result of this. The bank said that scanning a QR code does not actually give you access to the money; instead, it only notifies you that the money has been removed from your account.
