On Monday, PM Modi will visit Karnataka to inaugurate a greenfield helicopter production facility of state-run aerospace behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Tumakuru, which will initially produce light utility helicopters (LUH).
The 615-acre factory is billed by the Defense Ministry as India's largest helicopter-manufacturing facility and is planned as a one-stop solution for the country's helicopter requirements.
Officials said HAL plans to produce over 1,000 helicopters in the three to 15 ton range with a total turnover of over ₹4 lakh crore over a period of 20 years.
The facility will be scaled up to produce other helicopters such as Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs) and Indian Multirole Helicopters (IMRHs). It will also be used for maintenance, repair and overhaul of LCH, LUH, Civil Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and IMRH in future, officials said.
