Anand Mahindra heralds India's 'electrification' future after discovering lithium deposits

The Central Government said on Thursday that for the first time in the country, reserves of 59 lakh tonnes of lithium have been found in Jammu and Kashmir. Lithium is a non-ferrous metal and one of the key components in EV batteries.

Businessman Anand Mahindra on Monday predicted an 'electrified' future for India following the discovery of lithium deposits in Jammu and Kashmir. This is the first time that deposits of the metal used in some car batteries have been found in the country.

"There is no doubt that now India's future will be electrified," he tweeted, with the thumbs-up emoji approved.

The sentence - an allusion to the metal's use in electric car batteries - was well received by netizens, with many adding their own views in the comments. Mahindra is an avid Twitter user, posting a variety of news updates, light-hearted reactions to current situations and even memes.

"Good news for all of us... such good news for EV" netizens wrote in response.

Others still appear angry about the ecological impact. "What's so electrifying about the impending destruction of ancient ecology?" one Twitter user asked.

Earlier this week, the Geological Survey of India said it had found lithium deposits for the first time in the country. Lithium estimated resources of 5.9 million tonnes have been established in Reasi district of the northern union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Non-ferrous metals are one of the key components in EV batteries.

As India moves forward with its electric vehicle plans, efforts have been made to bolster supplies of key minerals, including lithium. In fact, the Mines Ministry had earlier said that it was taking several proactive steps to secure minerals from Australia and Argentina.

Currently, India is dependent on imports for several minerals such as lithium, nickel and cobalt. The discovery in Jammu and Kashmir will be important for the country's developmental plans.

The GSI findings have generated excitement in Reasi district as well, with many focusing on the potential for huge employment opportunities for the local people.

“This is the second biggest employment opportunity for Reasi district. The first was when the NHPC project was developed. The occasion is just as important, I must say. Unemployment will end to a great extent," panchayat member Rajendra Singh told news agency ANI.
