“Final figures on February 3, 2023 show that the momentum gained in sowing of rabi crops continued till the end of the season. Total area sown under rabi crops increased by 3.25% from 697.98 lakh hectare to 720.68 lakh hectare in 2021-22 as compared with last year (2021-22) and normal sown area (average area of last five years) Is. hectare in 2022-23," it added.

The increase in area is in all crops, - most in rice. An increase of 22.71 lakh hectares in all rabi crops, an increase of 11.20 lakh hectares in rice area from 35.05 lakh hectares in 2021-22 to 46.25 lakh hectares in 2022-23.

Talking about the increase in cultivation of crops, Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that it is the result of the combined efforts of our hardworking farmer brothers and sisters, agricultural scientists and farmer friendly policies of Modi. Government. “The government's focus is on increasing oilseed production to reduce import dependence in edible oils. In 2021-22, the country had to import 142 lakh tonnes of edible oils at a cost of ₹1.41 lakh crore. Due to renewed focus on oilseeds, the area under oilseeds increased by 7.31% from 102.36 lakh hectare during 2021-22 to 109.84 lakh hectare this year."

Tomar said this is a quantum jump of 31.03 lakh hectare as against the normal sowing area of 78.81 lakh hectare. “The increase in area under oilseeds at the rate of 7.31% is more than double the growth rate of 3.25% in all crops together. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh account for the major expansion in area under oilseeds."

Rapeseed and mustard have the maximum contribution in the increase in oilseeds area in rabi season. Mustard area has increased from 91.25 lakh hectare in 2021-22 to 6.77 lakh hectare to 98.02 lakh hectare in 2022-23.

“An increase of 7.49 lakh hectares in area under oilseeds, rapeseed and mustard alone accounted for 6.44 lakh hectares. The area brought under rapeseed and mustard cultivation is 54.51% more than the normal sown area of 63.46 lakh hectares. Major area expansion has been achieved due to the implementation of the Special Mustard Mission since last 2 years," the ministry said.
