New Delhi: Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that Aadhaar is one of the many documents for authentication and identification for the purpose of purifying electoral rolls.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the Law Minister said, “The process of rectification of electoral roll is a continuous process and involves various stakeholders including political parties at each stage starting from enrollment of voters, so that The list can be amended. Affects material change by virtue of change of residence, marriage, etc."
In this process, the Electoral Registration Officer relies on various documents and conducts physical verification and also settles the objections, if any.
The Electoral Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021, inter alia, envisages that the Electoral Registration Officer may also require the Aadhaar number for the purpose of authentication of entries in the electoral roll.
