4 years of Vande Bharat Express: How Indian Railways redefined train travel

 


Since the first Vande Bharat Express that was launched on February 15 and operates on the New Delhi-Varanasi route, nine more Vande Bharat Expresses have been launched by the Indian Railways in several parts of the country.

On February 15, 2019, on this date the Indian Railways and the people of India got a new semi-high-speed train, initially known as Train 18 and later renamed as Vande Bharat Express. The trainset was developed at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai in record time under the guidance of the then General Manager Sudhanshu Mani and his team developed a trainset that has all the features to become a game changer for Indian Railways after Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express.

The first Vande Bharat Express which was started on February 15 and is running on New Delhi-Varanasi route, nine more Vande Bharat Express have been started in many parts of the country. So far, a total of 10 Vande Bharat Express trains connecting 108 districts and 17 states of the country are running in the country.

In his address to the nation on 15 August 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that during the 75 weeks of the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence, 75 Vande Bharat trains will connect every corner of the country.

Vande Bharat train is India's first semi-high speed train equipped with world class passenger amenities. Due to faster acceleration and deceleration it can achieve higher speed and will reduce the travel time by 25% to 45%.

Amenities and Features in Vande Bharat Express

• The Vande Bharat Express train has an intelligent braking system which enables better acceleration and deceleration.

• All coaches are equipped with automatic doors; GPS based audio-visual passenger information system, on-board hotspot Wi-Fi for entertainment purposes and very comfortable seating. There are also swivel chairs in executive class. All toilets are of bio-vacuum type. The light is dual mode, ie. General illumination for each seat and diffused for individual.

• Pantry with facility to serve hot food, hot and cold beverages in each coach. The insulation is there to keep the heat and noise at very low levels for added passenger comfort.

• Vande Bharat Express has 16 air-conditioned coaches out of which two are executive class coaches. The total seating capacity is 1,128 passengers. It is much larger than the conventional Shatabdi rake of the same number of coaches, thanks to the relocation of all electric equipment to the underside of the coaches and also to the seats in the driving coach.

• It also has provision for Divyang friendly facilities.
