Wrestlers end strike after getting assurance of grievance redressal

The protest by internationally acclaimed Indian wrestlers ended as they received assurances that their grievances would be addressed. The wrestlers decided to end their strike after a second round of discussion with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.

The development came after the Indian Wrestling Association (IOA) announced the formation of a seven-member committee to probe the sexual harassment allegations against Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said that the monitoring committee will report in four weeks on the matter related to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

"It has been decided that an inspection committee will be constituted. The names will be announced tomorrow. The committee will complete its investigation within four weeks. It will thoroughly investigate all allegations of financial or sexual harassment that have been leveled against the WFI. have been planted. And its head." Thakur said after the marathon meeting.

The wrestlers who included international gold medalists like Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya decided to end the protest after they achieved a breakthrough. This was the second round of talks with the Union Sports Minister after the first round remained inconclusive.

The monitoring committee will look after the day-to-day affairs of WFI and Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will step down till the probe is completed.

"Till the probe is completed, he (Singh) will step aside and cooperate with the probe and the monitoring committee will look after the day-to-day affairs of the WFI," he added.

The inspection committee will be headed by boxer MC Mary Kom and will include other sportspersons like wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) president and IOA treasurer Sahdev Yadav.
