Punjab's Leader of the Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa said: "Chowdhary was walking with a Congress MP from Kerala when he suddenly collapsed after suffering a heart attack."




The MP from Jalandhar was taken in an ambulance to Civil Hospital in Phagwara where he was declared brought dead. He was 76 years old. Later his mortal remains were taken to his Jalandhar residence.


Meanwhile, Gandhi condoled the sudden demise of Chowdhury and said, "He was a down to earth hardworking leader, a pious man and a strong pillar of the Congress family, who devoted his life to public service from Youth Congress to Member of Parliament." Dedicated. ," adding, "I express my condolences to the bereaved family."


Expressing grief, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said Santokh Singh Choudhary's death was a "big blow to the party and the organisation", reported Hindustan Times.


Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann tweeted, "I am deeply saddened by the untimely death of Santokh Singh Chowdhary, Congress MP from Jalandhar. May his soul rest in peace."


The yatra was postponed for today after Chaudhary's death. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said the yatra would be suspended for 24 hours as a mark of respect to Chowdhury. It will resume tomorrow afternoon from Khalsa College Ground, Jalandhar.
