• The headmaster of a school in Punjab is happy as four students have finally made it to the merit list of the state board exams after 12 years

The headmaster of a school in Punjab is elated that four students have finally made it to the merit list of the state board exams after 12 years.

Rakesh Sharma, principal of Shaheed Gurdas Ram Memorial Government Senior Secondary School (Girls) in Zira, Ferozepur, told PTI news agency that they have made air travel arrangements for four students to make it to the merit list.

Sharma is paying the air travel expenses of the students from his own pocket.

According to the principal of the school, the students of class 10th and 12th of the school were not making it to the merit list of the Punjab School Education Board's examination for the last 12 years.

In order to motivate the students to work hard on their studies, Sharma asked them about their wishes which they would fulfill upon completion.

"The students wished for 'jahaj da jhootha' (air travel) and I told them that it is my commitment to fulfill their wish," Sharma said.

"I announced at a prayer meeting that if any student of class 10th or 12th secures a merit position in the board exams, I will ensure air travel to any destination of their choice within the country," he said.

Most of the students of the school are from poor and middle class families.

The principal said, "By the grace of God, four students - two from class 10 and two from class 12 - secured merit position in the final examination."

Sharma said, "Bhajanpreet Kaur and Simranjit Kaur, two Class XII girl students, had gone to Goa from Amritsar in a flight in November last year. Both had participated in the India International Innovation and Invention Expo (INEX-2022) in Goa."

Bhajanpreet's father is a 'granthi' (priest) at a local gurudwara and Simranjit's father is a truck mechanic.

Two other students will now fly from Amritsar to Delhi in the last week of January.

"They will visit Rashtrapati Bhavan, Red Fort and other places in the national capital," he said.

After two students availed the air travel facility, Sharma said that 22 more students of class 10th and 12th have now registered themselves to qualify.

Sharma said, "The students asked me if all 22 have qualified, what would I do in that case? I told them that I am committed to what I have said. They will get 'Jahaaz Da Jhootha'. "

"Students now correlate merit status with air travel," he said.

The principal of the school further said that when he joined the school in 2019, its rank was 48 out of 56 schools in the district.

He said that now the school is at first position in Ferozepur district.
