Here are the petrol and diesel prices in some major cities of India as on January 1, 2023.

On January 1, 2023, petrol and diesel prices in India remain mostly unchanged, and the prices have remained stable for the last seven months. On May 21, 2022, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reduced excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per liter and on diesel by Rs 6 per liter across the country. In Delhi, petrol costs ₹96.72 and diesel costs ₹89.62 per respectively. Petrol price in Mumbai is ₹106.31 per liter while diesel cost is ₹94.27.

In Kolkata, petrol costs ₹106.03 and diesel costs ₹92.76 per liter respectively. Petrol price in Chennai is ₹102.63 per liter while diesel cost is ₹94.24. In Bengaluru, it is ₹101.94 for a liter of petrol and ₹87.89 for a liter of diesel.

Any change in the prices of petrol and diesel becomes effective every day at 6 pm. The state-to-state variation in the cost of gasoline and diesel can be attributed to factors such as Value Added Tax (VAT), freight cost, local taxes, etc. The daily price revisions carried out by public sector OMCs such as Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) are in accordance with foreign exchange rates and international benchmark prices.
