The Panchayat Junior Clerk recruitment exam to be held on January 29 at 11 am has been postponed after the paper leak case came to the fore. The board will soon announce the date of retake of the exam which will be conducted as soon as possible.
While over 7,00,000 people across the state were expected to take the exam, only 26,882 students from Jamnagar had registered for it. However, the Chief Minister's Office was informed that over 9.50 lakh candidates had registered for the exam and the GSRTC offered free return transport to the applicants.
According to the Gujarat Panchayat Services Selection Board, Gandhinagar, a suspect has been taken into custody after a copy of the exam question paper was found, while police are conducting criminal proceedings and conducting additional investigations.
"In the larger interest of the candidates, it has been decided by the Board to 'Postponed' the competitive examination scheduled to be held on 29-01-2023 at 11-00 AM, to which all the candidates are requested to take note. Every candidate is advised not to visit the examination center due to the above reasons.The Sadar Examination will be conducted afresh as soon as possible, the date of which will be announced by the board shortly.
On reaching the examination venue in Jamnagar, students and their parents expressed anger and disappointment and demanded the government to take decisive action against those involved.
The board advised the candidates not to visit the examination centers and apologized for the inconvenience caused. It added, "The examination will be conducted afresh at the earliest, for which the board will issue fresh advertisement."
Manish Doshi, a spokesperson for the Gujarat Congress, claimed that this was the 15th government competitive exam to be postponed in the last 12 years due to the question paper leak.
Though the administration says it is taking stern action, according to Doshi, the main culprits have not even been detained. He alleged that the youth of the state were being used as pawns by the administration. Doshi alleged that the exam for which the first advertisement was published in 2016 has been postponed thrice.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in Gujarat Isudan Gadhvi took to Twitter to criticize the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration in the state over the paper leak issue. Gujarat has a history of leaking question papers for competitive exams, which led to massive agitation among the youth of the state. In the lead-up to the state assembly elections held in December, the BJP government faced fierce resistance from the Congress and the AAP over the matter.
AAP's national coordinator Arvind Kejriwal also pledged to bring in stricter laws against exam paper leaks, including a jail term of ten years.
