Mumbai road accident to drop by 30% in 2022: Report

At least 268 people died in 257 road accidents in Mumbai, while 387 people died in 376 accidents in 2021.

Mumbai is set to record a 30% drop in deaths due to road accidents in 2022 as compared to the previous year, a senior official said on Monday.

Last year, at least 268 people were killed in 257 road accidents in the city while 387 people lost their lives in 376 accidents in 2021, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Praveen Padwal was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

He said that it is a good sign that the traffic police recorded 30% less deaths in road accidents in 2022 as compared to 2021.

The number of fatal accidents has also come down during the road safety week, the official said, and the decline can be attributed to the continuous awareness programs and campaigns by the traffic police, which will end on January 17.

"We will launch more campaigns in the coming days to make people aware of traffic rules and ways to follow them," he said.

Urging people to cooperate with the traffic police, the official said seatbelts have been made mandatory for drivers and passengers in four-wheelers, while helmets are mandatory for two-wheeler riders and pillion riders.

Meanwhile, the report of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways states that a total of 1,997 road accidents in 2021 were caused by the use of mobile phones while driving. 1,040 people lost their lives in these road accidents.

The data further states that 555 road accidents took place due to red light jumping, while 222 people lost their lives in 2021.

The Committee noted that road accidents are multi-hazardous and require multi-pronged measures to mitigate the problems through concerted efforts of all agencies, both of the Central Government and State Governments.
