Moans on live TV: BBC apologizes after football coverage disrupted

Groans can be heard as Gary Lineker presides over the broadcast of the Wolverhampton v Liverpool third round match on 17 January.

After inappropriate sounds cut off live television coverage of the FA Cup, the BBC issued an apology. As Gary Lineker presided over the broadcast of Wolverhampton v Liverpool's third round match on 17 January, groans could be heard. Apparently, it was a prankster who hid a mobile phone in the studio playing the sound.

Before the Wolverhampton v Liverpool game at the Molineux Stadium on 17 January, noise cut off Gary Lineker's broadcast. Later, the former England striker shared a photo of a cellphone on Twitter, claiming it was "taped behind the set" inside the stadium. Lineker wrote, "In subversion form it was quite amusing."

Well, we found it taped behind the set. As sabotage it was quite amusing.

Lineker, Paul Ince and Danny Murphy continued their broadcast and attempted to minimize the disruption. Speaking to audience members, Lineker said, "I don't know if you heard it at home."

The BBC issued a statement saying, "We apologize to any viewers who were offended during our live coverage of football this evening." According to a spokesperson, the BBC is investigating the situation.

Lineker explained that, at first, he believed a video was delivered to an expert's phone. He then realized that the incident was a prank because it was "too loud", as he put it. He said that it was "quite difficult" to keep up with the pre-match build-up because when asked how loud the sound effects were in the studio, he could not hear what people were saying in his ears.

According to a video uploaded to YouTube, it appears the stunt is the work of YouTube prankster Daniel Jarvis. Five years ago, he did a similar work on BBC, which was also recorded and uploaded on his YouTube channel. How the YouTube prankster managed to get the phone into the BBC studios is still a mystery.
