Makar Sankranti 2022: This festival marks the day when the Sun enters the Makar Rashi or Makara Rashi. According to the solar calendar, it falls on January 14 every year. The festival also marks the end of winter and the beginning of the new harvest season. It has both seasonal and religious significance. It is considered one of the most auspicious days of the Hindu calendar.

Why is Makar Sankranti celebrated?

The day of Sankranti is dedicated to Lord Surya. It also refers to a specific solar day in the Hindu calendar. On this auspicious day, the Sun enters the Capricorn sign or Makara Rashi which marks the end of the winter months and the beginning of longer days. Magh month is starting from this time. Every 80 years, the day of Sankranti is postponed by one day to compensate for the variation caused by the Sun's orbit. From the day of Makar Sankranti, the Sun begins its Uttarayan Yatra or Uttarayan journey. Hence, this festival is also known as Uttarayan. On this day farmers across the country wish for a good harvest.

Makar Sankranti 2022: Surya Namaskar Performance Schedule

Ministry of AYUSH will organize Surya Namaskar demonstration program for 75 lakh people globally on Makar Sankranti on 14th January 2022 to commemorate the journey of Sun to the Northern Hemisphere. According to PIB, the occasion is celebrated as a way of thanking 'Mother Nature' for bestowing health, wealth and happiness. The human body also gets Vitamin D through exposure to the sun, which has been widely recommended in all branches of medicine around the world.

According to drikpanchang.com, Makar Sankranti Punya Kaal will start at 02:43 PM and end at 05:45 PM. The duration will be of 3 hours 02 minutes.

Makar Sankranti Maha Punya Kaal will start at 02:43 PM and end at 04:28 PM, its duration will be 1 hour 45 minutes.

Makar Sankranti Muhurta will be at 2:43 pm.


Makar Sankranti History


Sankranti is considered a deity. According to legend, Sankranti killed a demon named Sankarasura. The next day of Makar Sankranti is called Karidin or Kinkrant. On this day the goddess killed the demon Kinkarasura. Information about Makar Sankranti is available in Panchang. Panchang is the Hindu calendar that provides information about the age, form, clothing, direction and movement of Sankranti.

According to Drikpanchang, "The time between Makar Sankranti to 40 Ghatis (about 16 hours for Indian places if we consider the duration of 1 Ghati as 24 minutes) from the time of Makar Sankranti is considered good for auspicious work. Forty This period of Ghatis is known as Punya Kaal. Sankranti activities, such as taking a bath, offering Naivedya (food offered to the deity) to Lord Surya, giving charity or dakshina, performing Shraddha rituals and breaking the fast or parana, are punya. If Makar Sankranti occurs after sunset all the Punya Kaal Kriyas are postponed till the next sunrise. Therefore, all the Punya Kaal Kriyas should be done during the day time.


Importance of Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti is the date from which the Uttarayan movement of the Sun begins. The period from Kark Sankranti to Makar Sankranti is known as Dakshinayan.

Importance of Makar Sankranti

- According to the scriptures, Dakshinayan is the symbol of deity's night or negativity and Uttarayan is considered to be the symbol of Dev's day or the symbol of positivity. Since the sun moves north on this day, people take holy dips in holy places like Ganga, Godavari, Krishna, Yamuna river, chant mantras, etc. Generally Sun affects all zodiac signs, but it is said that Sun's entry into Cancer and Capricorn is extremely fruitful from religious point of view.

Before Makar Sankranti, the sun is in the southern hemisphere. For this reason, the nights are long and the days are short in winter in India. But with Makar Sankranti, the Sun begins its journey towards the Northern Hemisphere and hence, the days will be longer and the nights shorter.

On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, people express their gratitude to the people of India throughout the year by worshiping the Sun God in different forms. Any good deed or charity done during this period is more fruitful.

Lohri: A day before Makar Sankranti, Lohri is celebrated with enthusiasm in India mainly in Haryana and Punjab. At night, people gather around bonfires and throw sesame seeds, puffed rice and popcorn into the flames. Prayers are offered to the bonfire, wishing for abundance and prosperity.


- "Festival of charity" or "Khichdi": In Uttar Pradesh, it is primarily a festival of 'donation'. A month-long Magh Mela at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati in Allahabad begins on the day Makar Sankranti On this auspicious day, people in Uttar Pradesh fast and eat khichdi and a khichdi fair is organized at Gorakhdham in Gorakhpur.

- In Bihar, the festival of Makar Sankranti is known as Khichdi. Donating urad, rice, gold, woolen clothes, blanket etc. on this day has its own importance.

- All married women in Maharashtra donate cotton, oil and salt to other suhagins or married women on their first Sankranti.

In Bengal, there is a tradition of donating sesame seeds after taking a bath on Makar Sankranti. A huge fair is also organized every year at Gangasagar.

Pongal: On the occasion of Makar Sankranti in Tamil Nadu, this festival is celebrated as Pongal for four days.

Kite Festival: Kite festival is organized in Gujarat on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.
