China is reopening: Xinhua said that China received 325 inbound flights and 396 inbound ships on Sunday.
China saw almost 1.25 million travelers enter the country on its first day of reopening, although this figure is a fraction of the pre-pandemic flow.
There were 251,045 inbound passenger trips on Sunday, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing customs data. This compares with a daily average of about 945,300 arrivals in the first quarter of 2019, according to data from the National Immigration Administration.
The end of the quarantine for all arrivals on Sunday marked the end of Covid zero and China's long-awaited reopening with the world after three years of isolation. While this sparked an eagerness among the diaspora to reconnect with their loved ones, expensive airfares and still-tight flight capacity mean inbound travel remains difficult for many.
China received 325 flights and 396 ships on Sunday, Xinhua news agency cited the customs administration as saying. In the first quarter of 2019, the country accepted about 2,900 flights and 1,400 ships on an average a day.
Hong Kong and Macau, which share a land border with the mainland, were the top destinations for outbound Chinese residents.
More than 39,000 people visited Macau on Sunday, according to government figures, including about 33,000 from mainland China. The total number of visits was almost double the daily average of the previous seven days. On the same day, more than 5,000 mainland Chinese visited Hong Kong, more than double the previous Sunday's level.
