'Bharat Jodo Yatra' will not affect 2024 election results: Former minister MJ Akbar

The BJP-led central government had in August 2019 justified the withdrawal of special status for Jammu and Kashmir, saying it would help curb terrorism.

Former minister in the Narendra Modi cabinet, MJ Akbar said the quality of governance will decide the 2024 general elections, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodi visit will not have much impact on the Lok Sabha polls.

He also said that tourism has developed in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of the special status of the state by abrogating Article 370 of the Constitution.

“PM Modi has taken some radical decisions in the first term and continued it in the second. The next general election will not be won on the basis of yatra but on the basis of governance.

The journalist-turned-politician, who was earlier in the Congress before switching to the BJP, was referring to Rahul Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo Yatra'.

Akbar said, "For me, the ultimate, central fact of governance is how much one has done for the poor. And this is where Prime Minister Modi is far ahead of state governments."

He asserted that the Constitution says poverty has to be eradicated and Modi is determined to eliminate it, reported PTI.

"Look at the achievement of going through a crisis like COVID for two and a half years without the poor being unaffected...it is a huge achievement. Sometimes we cannot see the magnitude of what is happening," said the senior journalist.

Speaking about terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, "No one can eliminate cross-border terrorism, which has been instigated and is now the official policy of another country. So to expect it to end is too much." Will happen. But just look. Fact - tourism is at an all-time high."

"These are signs that peace and change have been brought. All positive signs show how successful the governance in Kashmir has been," he said.
