Bank SMS Scam! Woman loses ₹1 lakh in Gurugram

• An FIR was registered against unknown fraudsters under IPC sections 419 (cheating by impersonation) and 420 (cheating) at Cyber Crime, East Police Station.

In another episode of cyber crime, a woman resident of DLF Phase-5 was allegedly duped of ₹1 lakh. According to PTI, the victim Madhavi Dutta received a message on her mobile on January 21, which read, "Dear user, your HDFC account will be closed today, click on the link here, your PAN card number from the mobile number."

In his complaint to the police, Dutta said that he clicked on the link, which took him to a webpage, which asked him to feed in details. After that an OTP came on his mobile number.

In his online complaint, Gupta said, "As soon as I entered the OTP, Rs 1 lakh was deducted from my account. I called the cyber helpline 1930 several times but didn't get connected and finally went to the cyber portal and lodged a complaint." "

Following her complaint, an FIR was registered on Friday against unknown fraudsters under IPC sections 419 (cheating by impersonation) and 420 (cheating) at Cyber Crime, East Police Station.

Investigating officer ASI Manoj Kumar said, "The FIR has been registered and investigation is underway."

This is one of the many instances when an innocent citizen has become a victim of cyber fraud. It is always advised to be careful while clicking on any link received through SMS, email or even WhatsApp. These links can easily be a trap to defraud you and empty your bank accounts.

A key modus operandi of how these scams occur is that cyber criminals will send a message to create urgency. These messages may be related to closure of bank account due to incapacitation of service or lack of documents or any other document.

Always remember not to share details like your account number, ATM PIN and OTP with others. Also, avoid updating your account details through the internet. If possible, go to the bank's office for this.
