After a brief respite in Delhi, the cold wave returned again, people gathered near the bonfire

Delhi Weather Update: People were found huddled around roadside bonfires to deal with the bone-chilling conditions in the national capital.

After a brief respite on New Year, the cold wave conditions returned in Delhi on Monday. People were seen gathering around roadside bonfires to deal with the bone-chilling situation in the national capital.

"It is very cold. One cannot survive without sitting near the fire," said a watchman seen near the bonfire near Mata Sundari Road in the New Delhi area, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Another person waiting near the bonfire said, "I leave my place for work at around 5 in the morning. Sitting by the fire is the only relief in the cold weather."

As per the forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum and maximum temperatures in January 2023 are likely to be below normal over many parts of central India and adjoining areas of peninsular, east and northwest India.

Dense to very dense fog and cold wave conditions are likely to continue over the plains of northwest India during the next five days, the weather office said.

"Dense fog very likely during night/morning hours at few/many places over North India including Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh," an IMD press note said on Sunday.

The IMD said that the minimum temperature is likely to be above normal over southern parts of South Peninsula, many parts of Northeast India and parts of Northwest India.
