Udhayanidhi Stalin's elevation triggers 'Sunrise vs Sunrise' debate in Tamil Nadu

Udhayanidhi Stalin's induction into the cabinet headed by his father MK Stalin is a 'sunrise' moment for ruling DMK workers and ardent party supporters, but another 'sunrise' chapter in the decades-long history of the Dravidian party founded by opposition leader C.N. sees Annadurai.

However, political commentator Sumanth C Raman feels that the party is 'inept' about appointing sons and daughters to key positions while others are not.

Udhayanidhi, the 45-year-old actor-producer, is hailed as the "rising sun" by DMK workers, in an apparent reference to the party's rising sun symbol.

TRB Raja, three-time MLA from Mannargudi constituency and son of Lok Sabha MP TR Balu, tweeted, "The power to drive away darkness is possible only from the sun. Chinnavar (Jr.) Udhayanidhi Stalin will shine as the new sun. Government of Tamil Nadu "

DMK IT wing chief Raja wished him to do wonders as a minister. Raja said Udhayanidhi's "down to earth and friendly approach" in his potential role as youth welfare and sports development minister would help tame Tamil Nadu's hidden sporting talents, Raja said and expressed confidence that it would help the sports sector in the future. For there will be a golden age in the state.

Not only the younger generation of DMK leaders, but seniors like TKS Elangovan also welcomed the elevation of the 45-year-old youth wing leader of the party, one of the two children of the Stalin-Durga couple.

"Udhayanidhi has the support of senior leaders," Elangovan told PTI.

Others like Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi have also been supporting Udhayanidhi's induction into the cabinet for a long time. However, the opposition is not happy with the move and AIADMK and BJP termed it as "new age dynasty politics and the rise of the son once again in DMK".

AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan commented "Prince Charming is being made a cabinet minister and in future he will be sworn in as a king." Citing a viral campaign video about Stalin's promise to keep his family away from such posts, Sathyan said, "Stalin has lied to the people.

People working for the party are rotting on the streets and the way the party is functioning is undemocratic. BJP state vice-president Narayanan Thirupati also tried to recall Stalin's earlier promise.

"What did Stalin say when he was in opposition. He said that his family members would not enter politics or gain power... Dynasty politics is not good for democracy," he said.

In response, Elangovan said, "There is no point in calling this dynastic politics, as if this decision was imposed on workers and people. Udhayanidhi is firm in Dravidian ideology." He indicated that the BJP practices dynasty politics. Sumant Raman said, "DMK has never been shy about its dynastic politics."

"However, other parties keep quiet about it and act as if they are not dynastic. I do not think that calling DMK as a dynastic party and accusing Udhayanidhi will have negative implications for DMK. But depends on how he conducts himself without undermining the senior minister."

Senior journalist RK Radhakrishnan feels that Udhayanidhi's induction into the Stalin-led cabinet "will be a problem for the DMK". "No one appreciates family politics in Tamil Nadu, it will be a blow to them in the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2024," he said.
