US, European stock markets jumped on Thursday on US labor data

Wall Street and European stocks rose on Thursday as a rise in US jobless claims signaled some cooling in the economy, bringing optimism about the direction of interest rate hikes.

The US Federal Reserve and other central banks have raised rates in an effort to rein in rising inflation, but investors fear the aggressive stance could trigger a recession as higher borrowing costs slow economic activity.

Data on Thursday showed that initial US jobless claims for the week ending Dec. 24 rose by more than expected to 225,000, indicating the labor market may be cooling.

Central bank policymakers have been particularly concerned about the jobs market, where demand for workers has exceeded supply, and wages are rising fast.

The Paris CAC 40 index and the Frankfurt DAX closed nearly 1 percent higher, while London's FTSE 100 rose 0.2 percent.

Wall Street closed higher after two gloomy days, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq surging 2.6%.
