A 67-year-old man has been found infected with Zika virus in Bavdhan area of Maharashtra's Pune district, the health department said on Friday. According to news agency ANI, the infected person is a resident of Nashik and had come to Pune on 6 November.
The patient came to Jehangir Hospital on November 16 with fever, cough, joint pain and fatigue. On November 18, he was diagnosed with Zika virus in a private laboratory.
However, the patient is now clinically stable and has no complications, the health department was quoted as saying by ANI.
In an official statement, the Health Department of Maharashtra said, "One case of Zika virus has been reported in Maharashtra. A 67-year-old male patient was found in Bavdhan Pune city, he is originally from Nashik and died on 6 November. came to Pune. Earlier on October 22, he had visited Surat.
"On November 30, the NIV confirmed that he has Zika virus infection. Currently, the patient is clinically stable and has no complications," the statement said.
Authorities have ordered an entomological survey of Zika virus in Pune city to rule out future outbreaks. Further investigation is being done in the city.
Significantly, this is the third case of Zika virus in Maharashtra. Earlier in Maharashtra's Palghar district, a seven-year-old girl was found infected with the virus spread by mosquito bites. Earlier in July last year, the first patient was found in Pune.
Zika virus, which was first discovered in a monkey in Uganda in 1947, caused its first pandemic in Micronesia in 2007, most notably in Brazil, before exploding in Latin America in 2015. It is mainly caused by a virus transmitted by the Aedes mosquito.
Symptoms of Zika virus include mild fever, rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, or headache.
