Landslide in Malaysia kills two, dozens missing

Two people were killed and more than 50 went missing in a landslide at a camping site in Malaysia early Friday.

Two people were killed and more than 50 missing after a landslide hit a camping site in Malaysia early Friday, officials said.

The landslide in Selangor state, on the outskirts of the capital Kuala Lumpur, happened at about 3am (1900 GMT) on the side of a road near a farmhouse that serves camping facilities, the state's Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement.

A total of 79 people were hit by the landslide and 23 were found safe, the department said. Besides the two dead, three were injured and 51 are still missing.

The landslide fell from an estimated height of 30 meters (100 ft) above the campsite, and covered an area of about one acre (0.4 ha), said Norazam Khamis, director of the department.

Told.

The disaster occurred just outside the Genting Highlands, a scenic hill country in the Batang Kali district north of the capital that is popular for its resorts and natural beauty.

Selangor is the most prosperous state in the country and has previously suffered landslides, often attributed to forest and land clearance.

The region is in the rainy season but no heavy rain or earthquakes were recorded overnight.

A year ago, floods caused by torrential rains in seven states across the country displaced nearly 21,000 people.
