Joe Biden to Ukrainian President Zelensky: 'Your respect'

 


Joe Biden has told Volodymyr Zelensky: 'It's an honor to be with you.' 


During a visit to the White House on 21 December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude to US President Joe Biden, US legislators and US citizens for their support. This was Zelensky's first known visit outside his native nation since Russia's invasion in February. 


Ukrainians "inspire the world", Biden told Zelensky before the start of the Oval Office summit. Zelensky said that he had been unsuccessful in his previous attempts to move to the United States. He emphasized that the war was "not over" and that his country still had many obstacles to overcome in its conflict with Russia. 


Biden told Zelensky, "It's an honor to be with you." It was previously reported that Biden would announce nearly $2 billion in aid and transfer Patriot missile batteries to Ukraine to help bolster its defenses this winter. Patriot air defense system, which can target missiles and aircraft. 


In recent weeks, Ukraine has been the victim of a stream of Russian missile and drone attacks, directed against its civilian population and vital energy infrastructure, resulting in power and water outages. 


Ukrainian soldiers will receive system operation instruction from the US in a third country. A senior official insisted that Ukraine would operate the Patriot battery and that the US was not changing its policy on troops. 


By the end of the week, US lawmakers will send Biden a $1.7 trillion spending measure for fiscal year 2023, which includes more than $45 billion in aid for Ukraine. 


But it is uncertain whether the upcoming Congress will provide significant aid to Ukraine. Republicans in the House have threatened to probe Biden's financial support for Ukraine in 2023 with more scrutiny. 


Ahead of the November midterm elections, President Biden said he was "worried" that Republicans would cut aid to the beleaguered country if they took control of Congress.
