India's Technical Expert Committee on Immunization has recommended Bharat Biotech's nasal vaccine against COVID-19 as a booster dose for adults, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Thursday. The minister made the statement during the winter session of Parliament.

The world's first intra-nasal vaccine for Covid, developed by India, iNCOVACC, has recently received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO).

INCOVACC is a recombinant replication-deficient adenovirus vectored vaccine with pre-fusion stabilized spike protein. This vaccine candidate was evaluated in Phase I, II and III clinical trials with successful results.

This vaccine has been specially formulated to allow intranasal delivery through nasal drops. The nasal delivery system has been designed and developed to be cost-effective in low- and middle-income countries.

It was developed in partnership with Washington University, St. Louis, which designed and developed the recombinant adenoviral vector construct and evaluated it in preclinical studies for efficacy.

Product development including preclinical safety evaluation, large scale manufacturing scale up, formulation and delivery device development including human clinical trials were conducted by Bharat Biotech.

Meanwhile, Mandaviya will also hold a meeting with the Health Ministers of the States and Union Territories today, on Friday, regarding the rising Covid cases in some parts of the world.

The minister said the focus is on ensuring that no unknown form of the virus enters India and at the same time there are no barriers to travel to other parts of the world, reports PTI.

Mandaviya said, "We are constantly monitoring the situation. There is no direct flight between China and India, but people come through other routes."

A surge in Covid cases is being seen in China and some other countries. A large number of cases are being reported in many countries including Japan, America, South Korea, France, Greece, Italy.
