The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it is in preliminary discussions with 10 cities, but has not disclosed a time frame for plans to award the 2036 edition. Thakur said his government would consult the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and prepare a roadmap ahead of next year's IOC session in Mumbai.

"The IOC session is a prestigious event for India and the government will support whatever steps it has to take in the bid with the IOA. It should be a joint preparation."

New Delhi hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982 and the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Thakur suggested that Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, be presented as a possible Olympic venue.
