Declare disputed areas as union territories: Uddhav Thackeray on Maharashtra-Karnataka border row

Uddhav Thackeray said till the matter is pending before the Supreme Court, Karnataka-occupied Maharashtra should be declared a UT by the Centre.

As the border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka escalates, Shiv Sena (UBT) President and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray suggested that the disputed areas be declared as Union Territories.

He said, "It is not just a matter of language and border, but a matter of 'humanity'. Till the matter is pending before the Supreme Court, Karnataka-occupied Maharashtra should be declared a union territory by the central government."

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on the border issue with Karnataka, with former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray saying the opposition stood in support of the resolution.

The resolution states that Maharashtra will make efforts to legally incorporate 865 Marathi-speaking villages in Karnataka into the western state.

"The state government will legally plead in the Supreme Court for the inclusion of inch and inch of land (in Maharashtra) of Belgaum, Karwar Bidar, Nipani, Bhalki towns and 865 Marathi speaking villages of Karnataka," the resolution said.

It said that the Central Government should urge the Karnataka Government to implement the decision taken in the meeting with the Union Home Minister (on the border dispute issue).

The central government should direct the Karnataka government to guarantee the safety of Marathi people in the border areas.

Speaking to reporters, Thackeray said, "We supported today's resolution. We will support whatever is in favor of Maharashtra. But there are some questions. For more than two years people (living in border areas) Wale) are demanding their inclusion." Maharashtra. What are we doing about that?"

"Today the government replied that the disputed area cannot be declared as a Union Territory as said by the Supreme Court in 2008. However, the situation is not the same now. The Karnataka government is not following it. They There is an assembly session going on and its name has been changed." Belagavi. So we should go to the Supreme Court and ask the SC to declare it a UT," Thackeray said.

In particular, the boundary dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka is related to the implementation of the States Reorganization Act of 1956. The then Maharashtra government had sought readjustment of its boundary with Karnataka.
