Cyclone Mandus moving at a speed of 12 kmph, heavy rain expected in these states

A deep depression which was over southeast and neighboring southwest Bay of Bengal, is moving nearly west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph for the past 6 hours and lay 390 km off the coast of Karaikal and 480 km off Chennai. Km is reported to be in the southwest. According to a release issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).


Around midnight on Wednesday, the depression intensified into cyclonic storm "Mandas" over the southwest Bay of Bengal.


The Cyclonic Storm 'MANDS' moved nearly west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during last 6 hours and lay centered over southwest Bay of Bengal till today. It is 390 km east-southeast of Karaikal and about 480 km south-east of Chennai. #Mandas cyclone

The release issued by IMD said, “The storm continued to move nearly west-northwestwards with a speed of 11 kmph during the last 6 hours, and make landfall over south Bengal on the morning of December 08, 2022 (0830 hours IST) - remained concentrated near West Bay. Latitude 9.5°N and Longitude 83.8°E, about 300 km east-northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 420 km east-southeast of Jaffna (Sri Lanka), 460 km east-southeast of Karaikal and about 550 km south-southeast of Chennai East. ,


The release further said, "It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Sriharikota, with maximum sustained wind speed." The wind speed could range from 65-75 kmph to 85 kmph around midnight. December 9."

According to the IMD forecast, very heavy to very heavy rain is likely over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and isolated heavy rainfall over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas of Rayalaseema on Thursday.


On Friday, light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places over North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining South Coastal Andhra Pradesh is likely to. and North Interior Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema.


The IMD also issued a storm surge warning, saying "a storm surge of height of about 0.5 meters above astronomical tide is likely to inundate low-lying areas of north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry at the time of landfall."
