Cyclone Mandus is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal. These states will be affected

 



• The name of the cyclonic storm will be 'Cyclone Mandus', a name given by the United Arab Emirates which means a treasure box in Arabic.

A new tropical cyclone is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal and is likely to affect Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh. Heavy rain is going to occur in the coastal areas due to the formation of a cyclonic storm.

The cyclonic storm will be named 'Cyclone Mandus', a name given by the United Arab Emirates which means a treasure box in Arabic. This will be the second tropical storm to form in the Bay of Bengal after the monsoon this year after 'Cyclone Sitarang' that hit the Bangladesh coast in the month of October. Cyclone Mandus is likely to cross the coast on December 8.

On 5 December, a low pressure area formed over South Andaman Sea and neighborhood and persisted over the same area. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate as a depression over southeast Bay of Bengal by today evening. Thereafter, it is very likely to move west-northwestwards, gradually intensify further into a cyclonic storm and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh and Bengal coasts by morning of 8 December. Will reach the South-West Gulf of India.

A low pressure area over south Andaman Sea at 0830 hrs IST on 5th December. Will gradually intensify further into CS to concentrate into a depression over southeast BoB by 06 December and approach north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry by 08 December.

"As per INSAT 3D imagery clouds associated with the low pressure area have broken low and moderate cloud embedded with intense to very intense convection Minimum Cloud Top Temperature (CTT) during last 6 hours over Andaman Sea over southeast Bay of Bengal has increased to -93 degree Celsius," according to an IMD statement.

Under its influence, rain activities are very likely to commence over North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from December 7 midnight. The rainfall activity will gradually increase with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places over North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on 5th and 9th December.

According to private weather forecasting agency Skymet, heavy to very heavy rain with gusty winds is likely over Tamil Nadu and Coastal Andhra Pradesh from December 7 to 9.

"There is a possibility of becoming a cyclone, but it may weaken before reaching the coast," said Mahesh Palawat, vice-president, climate change and meteorology, Skymet Weather Services. But the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh will receive heavy rains on December 7 and 8. It is a fast-moving weather system."

Meanwhile, six teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in Tamil Nadu, in view of the heavy rainfall on 8 December.
