Close watch on new Covid-19 variants: Health minister tells Lok Sabha

 


Health Minister said that random RT-PCR sampling of passengers arriving at international airports has started in the country

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Thursday that the Center is closely monitoring the new Kovid-19 variant. The minister said in a speech in the Lok Sabha that states have been urged to expedite genome sequencing and implement masking norms.

Mandaviya said that the COVID-19 virus is constantly evolving and asserted that the health ministry has been proactive in managing the pandemic and has given financial assistance to states in their fight against the infectious virus.

"The ever-changing nature of the coronavirus continues to pose a threat to global health," he told the lower house of parliament. He told the House, "Covid cases are increasing in the world since last few days but in India, cases are decreasing. We are seeing increasing Covid cases and deaths in China."

“We are monitoring the global Covid situation and taking steps accordingly. States are advised to scale up genome-sequencing for timely identification of new variant of COVID-19."

Assuring about the measures taken by the government to deal with the surge in Covid cases in other countries, the minister said, "Random sampling of international passengers arriving at airports has begun."

Mandaviya said that states have been asked to do genome sequencing of every Covid case, this will enable tracking of new variants. "In view of the festive season, states have been asked to be vigilant, create awareness about masks and sanitisers," he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to hold a high-level meeting today at 3.30 pm on the situation of Kovid-19 in the country.

On Wednesday, the Union Health Minister reviewed the COVID-19 situation in the country and ordered officials to remain vigilant and increase surveillance.

Earlier, the health ministry had urged all states and union territories to undertake whole genome sequencing of Covid positive samples to track newly discovered variants in light of the increase in cases in Japan, the United States, Republic of Speed up Korea, Brazil and China.
