In view of the increasing cases of corona virus in China, the Union Health Ministry has appealed to the Congress party to follow proper Kovid rules in the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in a letter to Rahul Gandhi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has asked them to ensure that proper Covid guidelines are being followed. Mandaviya said the yatra should be stopped keeping in mind the "public health emergency" if proper rules are not followed. Mandaviya urged Congress leaders to use masks and sanitisers in the yatra and let only vaccinated people participate.

Congress's Bharat Jodo Yatra is all set to enter the national capital Delhi on 24th December. Incidentally, the letter to Congress leaders was released on December 20.

In response to Mandaviya's letter, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram questioned the Center for targeting only the old party when there is no ban on other public gatherings.

Chidambaram told ANI news agency, "I haven't seen the letter, but what are the Covid protocols today? It seems we don't have enforceable Covid protocols in any other public gatherings. If not then suddenly on the Bharat Jodo Yatra Why the attention?" That it is ranking the BJP?"

I haven't seen the letter but what are the Covid protocols today? It looks like we don't have enforceable COVID protocols at any other public gatherings. Why is there suddenly so much focus on Bharat Jodo Yatra that it is ranking BJP?: Congress MP Karti Chidambaram

Another Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury asked the Center whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi followed the Covid protocol during the Gujarat elections.

In a verbal attack against the Union Health Minister, Chowdhary said, "I think Mansukh Mandaviya does not like Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra, but people are liking it and joining it. Deployed to divert attention."

India's Covid tally is currently comparatively lower than that of China. However, given the geographical location between the two countries, the Center is looking to act swiftly to avert a health crisis in the country.

On Wednesday, the number of Covid cases in India climbed to 4,46,76,330 with 131 new infections reported in 24 hours. The number of active cases dropped to 3,408 and three deaths were reported in a day.

Active cases comprise 0.01% of the total infections. According to the ministry's website, the national COVID-19 recovery rate has increased to 98.80%.

A decrease of 82 cases has been registered in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. While China on Wednesday reported 3,049 new domestic Covid cases and no new deaths.

China's hospitals are struggling, pharmacy shelves are empty and cremation grounds are overwhelmed in the wake of the Chinese government's sudden decision last month to lift lockdowns, quarantines and mass testing.

But the government said on Tuesday that only those who died directly from respiratory failure caused by the virus would be counted in the Covid death toll.

From the country's northeast to southwest, crematorium workers said they were struggling with a rise in deaths, the AFP news agency said.
