The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is going to introduce a unique rule, which has been regularly practiced in football, but never before in cricket.
Next year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be able to use an "Impact Player" rule. This may sound like a simple rule substitution, but it is much more than that. And, many believe the rule could be "game-changing."
The rule will allow IPL 2023 teams to replace one of their regular players with an impact player. Now, this has been a regular practice in cricket. A "12th man" may be used as a substitute at any time by the fielding team, a practice mostly done when one of the players is injured. 12th man can field and take catches. But, the player is not allowed to bat or bowl.
However, as per the new rule, an "Impact Player" would be able to do both. At the toss, each team must name four "impact players" in addition to the starting XI. One of them can be used during the game. Before the end of the 14th over of any innings, a player may come to any start and still bat and bowl.
The new rule that will be introduced in IPL 2023 looks much like the one used in football, where there is no restriction on the substitute player. BCCI tries new "Impact Player" rule in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In October, Delhi's Hrithik Shokeen became the first "Impact Player" in the history of Indian cricket. The off-spinner became part of the game in Delhi form. Was defending 167 against Manipur during the second innings.
Shokeen, who came in for opener Hiten Dalal, took two wickets for 13 runs in three overs as Delhi won by 71 runs. Dalal scored 47 runs in the first 27 balls.
714 Indian cricketers are among the 991 players who have signed up for the IPL 2023 players auction, which will take place on December 23 in Kochi. Australia has the most players in the auction pool out of 14 overseas nations, followed by South Africa with 57 players (52).
