Assam grants industry status to its tourism sector

With grants in the state, restaurants, cafeterias, health clubs, spas and wellness centres, among others, are eligible for incentives under the industrial policy

The Assam cabinet has approved a proposal to give industry status to the tourism sector in the state to boost investment and generate employment.

State Tourism Minister Jayant Mallabarua said fresh investments in tourism infrastructure, sustainable in nature, along with industry status quo, would contribute to rapid job creation, public-private partnership and growth.

Along with the grant, restaurants, cafeterias, health clubs, spas and wellness centres, among others, are eligible for incentives under the industrial policy. This step will further encourage and promote private investment in the above areas of tourism sector.

“This decision will bring a paradigm shift in the tourism sector. Earlier only hotels and resorts above the three-star category and river cruises were included under the key sectors of the Assam Industrial Policy. But, now many new tourism units like heritage hotels, bungalows, camping sites, restaurants, amusement parks, ropeways, museums, tour operator services, adventure parks, water sports etc. will also be included in the thrust area of industrial policy. Mallabarua said.

The newly-implemented policy aims at sustainable and environment-friendly investments, apart from capital formation and generation of gainful employment. The ministry also said that infrastructure can be developed through Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode, which will contribute to the overall development of the region.

He said, “The tourism sector will receive a substantial amount of private investments due to the new status it receives, which provides incentives, subsidies, reimbursements, etc. as per the industry policy for investors, and ultimately these investments will create new employment opportunities. "

He said that Assam has now become an all-season tourist destination for its unique wildlife, bio-diversity and to experience an untapped wonderland. Tourism is one of the main sources of income generation for the people over the years.
