Amid Covid scare, IMA advises citizens to avoid gatherings, international travel

Amid the rise in Covid cases in some countries, the Indian Medical Association has advised citizens to avoid public gatherings such as marriages, political or social meetings as well as international travel.

He also asked citizens to follow Covid-appropriate behavior such as using masks in public places and maintaining social-distancing norms to "avoid the impending Covid outbreak".

The IMA said that as per the available reports, around 5.37 lakh new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours from countries like the US, Japan, South Korea, France and Brazil.

"With strong infrastructure in the public as well as private sector, dedicated medical manpower, proactive leadership support from the government and availability of adequate drugs and vaccines, India will be able to manage any eventuality like in the past," it said.

The doctors' body also appealed to the government to issue necessary instructions to the concerned ministries and departments to provide emergency medicines, oxygen supplies and ambulance services to enhance preparedness for any situation that may be seen in 2021.

The IMA has also issued an advisory to its state and local branches to take necessary preparatory steps in case of an outbreak in their areas.

"As of now, the situation is not alarming and hence there is no need to panic. Prevention is better than cure," the IMA said.

It also advised to wash hands regularly with soap or sanitizer and consult doctors in case of symptoms like fever, sore throat, cough and loose motion.

Earlier, in an interaction with ANI about the rise in cases, Dr Anil Goel of Indian Medical Association said, "India needs to go back to COVID basics - testing, treatment, tracing".

He further assured, "There will be no lockdown situation in the country" and added, "Since 95% people here have been vaccinated".

Talking about the immune system of the people, he further said, "Indians have a stronger immune system than the Chinese..."

Meanwhile, in a high-level meeting, PM Modi urged everyone to wear masks in crowded public places. He also cautioned against complacency and directed the authorities to strengthen ongoing surveillance measures, especially at international airports.

Today Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will also hold a meeting with Health Ministers of States and Union Territories regarding rising Covid cases in some parts of the world.
