18 routes in NE region operational under RCS-UDAN: Reddy

New Delhi: Union Tourism Minister G. Kishan Reddy said that 18 routes are operational in the North Eastern Region (NER) under the RCS-UDAN scheme to provide air connectivity.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, the Minister said that NER is the focus area of RCS-UDAN to facilitate/stimulate regional air connectivity. "Ministry of Railways has also upgraded its infrastructure in North East through gauge conversion, introduction of Vista Dome coaches and upgradation of stations."

Reddy said that the Ministry of Tourism has approved the project 'Development of View Points in the North East Region' at 22 scenic spots. "We have identified and forwarded a list of 25 tourist places which can be taken up as a pilot project for formation of a separate police unit in the States/UTs."

He said that the Ministry has also set up a 24x7 multilingual tourist information helpline in 12 languages. "A code of conduct for safe and dignified tourism has been adopted to encourage tourism activities."

The Minister said that the Market Development Assistance Scheme was revised to include online promotion for NER and increase the limit of financial assistance permissible under the scheme.

Reddy said that the Ministry also provides financial assistance to the North Eastern States, which includes development of tourism infrastructure, promotion of fairs/festivals and tourism related events, information technology related projects, publicity campaigns, human resource development, market research etc. Includes support for
