17 cars from Maruti Suzuki, Tata and others may be discontinued in 2023: Here's why

• As many as 17 cars offered by various auto makers could be discontinued from April 2023. Because a new set of emission norms called Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms will come into force in the country from April next year.

The coming year 2023 has not yet brought good news for the car buyers in the country. Major car companies have announced a hike in the prices of all models from January 2023. Now, reports suggest that 17 cars offered by various auto makers could be discontinued from April 2023. Why? Because a new set of emission norms called Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms will come into force in the country from April next year.

What are Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms?

RDE requires that vehicles have onboard self-diagnostic equipment to monitor real-time driving emissions levels. Keeping a close eye on emissions, the device will continuously monitor key parts like catalytic converter and oxygen sensor to meet the emission norms. RDE testing measures pollutants such as NOx emitted by vehicles in a real-life environment rather than just in a laboratory, resulting in better compliance. The RDE is described as Phase 2 of the BS-VI emission norms in India, with the first phase starting in 2020.

Even upgrading the semiconductors used by the vehicle to monitor throttle, crankshaft position, air intake pressure, engine temperature and exhaust emissions content (particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, CO2, sulphur), etc. Will happen. In addition, the vehicles will also have programmed fuel injectors to control the level of fuel burn.

This would require car manufacturers to upgrade their car engines which could be more expensive than the existing engines. Diesel cars will be most affected by these new emission norms. According to reports, companies are also considering discontinuing some models to comply with the new norms. Wondering which cars might be taken off the road?
