Maharashtra vs Karnataka: How did the border dispute between the 2 BJP-ruled states begin?

Refuting the claims, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that no such village has sought merger with Karnataka.

A war of words broke out between political leaders of the two states after Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai claimed that some villages in Maharashtra's Sangli district, which is grappling with water crisis, passed a resolution for merger with Karnataka.

However, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis refuted the claims, saying that no such village has sought merger with Karnataka. He had also said that no village from Maharashtra would go to Karnataka, as reported by ANI.

Fadnavis wrote on Twitter, "No village in Maharashtra will go to Karnataka! The state government will fight vigorously in the Supreme Court to get Marathi speaking villages including Belgaum-Karwar-Nipani."

Responding to these comments, CM Bommai wrote on Twitter, “Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis has given provocative statement on Karnataka Maharashtra border issue and his dream will never come true. Our government is committed to protect the country's land, water and borders."

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra Ajit Pawar also condemned Bommai's remarks on the border dispute between the two states and asked Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis to "give a befitting reply".

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray also took a dig at Shinde and said he lacked the courage to speak against his Karnataka counterpart, reported PTI.

“Have we lost heart because the Chief Minister of Karnataka is conveniently claiming villages in Maharashtra? Is the Chief Minister of Karnataka getting any blessings from Delhi? Does the Center want the same?" Thackeray said.

After this, CM Shinde of Maharashtra insisted that his government will not let even an inch of Maharashtra's land go into anyone's hands.

We are working to provide justice to the Marathi people in the border areas. Not even an inch of space will be allowed in Maharashtra. It is the responsibility of our government to solve the problems of 40 villages," Shinde told reporters as quoted by ANI.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar also said that the Bharatiya Janata Party "cannot run away from the Karnataka issue".
