New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Saturday said that judges at the grassroots level hesitate to grant bail due to the fear of being targeted for granting bail in heinous cases.

At a felicitation function organized by the Bar Council of India, CJI Chandrachud said, "There is a flood of bail applications in the higher judiciary because of the reluctance at the grassroots level to grant bail. Judges at the grassroots level are reluctant to grant bail, so Not that they don't understand crime." But there is a fear of being targeted for granting bail in heinous cases."

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju was also present on the occasion. He expressed concern over the number of lawyers meeting the CJI regarding transfers.

"I have heard that some lawyers want to meet the CJI in connection with the transfer case. It may be an individual issue, but if this becomes a recurring precedent for every decision by the collegium, which is supported by the government, then ' Where will it take', will be the whole dimension." Justice DY Chandrachud, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court of India, became the 50th head of the country's judiciary on 9 November. His tenure will last till 10 November 2024.

Justice Chandrachud was a judge of the Bombay High Court from March 29, 2000 until his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. He also served as the Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 until his appointment as a judge in the Bombay High Court. Court. He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Bombay High Court in June 1998.
