International Lusophone Festival to be held in Goa from 3rd to 6th December

 



The festival will include performances by visiting cultural troupes from CPLP countries with around 70 artistes at multiple venues in Goa.

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in partnership with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Government of Goa will organize the International Lusophone Festival in Goa from December 3-6. The festival seeks to connect India with the Lusophone world.

Goa has had historical links with the Lusophone world, nurtured through the presence of Portuguese cultural institutions such as the Orient Foundation and the Camões Institute that promote the Portuguese language and culture in India. It has deepened our economic, cultural cooperation and people-to-people ties with CPLP member countries.

The International Lusophone Festival will be inaugurated by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan. Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi will be the guest of honour.

The festival will include performances by visiting cultural troupes from CPLP countries (around 70 artistes) at several venues in Goa, such as the ESG Complex, Azad Maidan, Sanskriti Bhawan, Institut Menezes Braganza etc. As part of the festival, workshops on Lusophone music for artistes and volunteers, various workshop cum exhibitions of photocopying of historical records, unique architecture of Goa, handicrafts of Goa and furniture of Goa are being organised. In addition, the Lusophone Food and Spirits Festival will also showcase the culinary links between India and the Lusophone world.

The roundtable discussions on "India's Reach to the Global South - Exploring Convergence with the CPLP" and "India-Lusophone Historical and Cultural Relations: Retrospect and Prospects" will explore not only India's current and historical Lusophone connectivity, but also ways forward Will also discuss. for future engagements.

The Community of Portuguese Language Countries (Comunidad dos Países de Lingua Portuguesa), also known as the Lusophone Commonwealth (Comunidad Lusofona), is a multilateral forum established on 17 July 1996 at the first CPLP Heads of State and Government Summit in Lisbon. took place in the conference.

The founding members were Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe; While Timor Leste and Equatorial Guinea joined later. These 9 Lusophone countries consist of approximately 300 million people in 4 different continents (Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe). India joined the CPLP in July 2021 as an associate observer. As part of India's engagement with the CPLP, the Ministry of External Affairs celebrated World Portuguese Language Day in Delhi on 05 May 2022, soon after joining the CPLP. This celebration is also a part of our efforts to take this association forward.
