India secured more than 90% of the votes cast by the Full Members of IEC during its General Meeting held in San Francisco recently
New Delhi: The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution on Friday said that India has won the vice-chairmanship of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the chair of the Strategic Management Board (SMB) for the term 2023-25.
IEC is an international standard setting body that publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. The SMB is an apex governing body of the IEC responsible for technical policy matters.
India recently secured more than 90% of the votes cast by the full members of IEC during the IEC General Meeting held in San Francisco, USA. Vimal Mahendru will be the IEC Vice President representing India.
"Representative of India, Member of the Indian National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) by securing more than 90% votes during the General Meeting held recently at San Francisco, USA by the Full Members of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) ..and various technical committees of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS-India) were elected," the ministry said.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, representation of BIS (India) in the policy and governance bodies of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and IEC ensures that the Indian perspective is put forward on important strategic and policy matters and that opportunities to align also provides. National standardization priorities in line with international best practices.
Working on the growth mantra provided by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, BIS is continuously expanding its international footprint.
"At present, BIS (India) has representation in various policy and governance bodies of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and IEC such as ISO Council, ISO Technical Management Board (TMB), IEC SMB, IEC Market Strategy Board (MSB), IEC Business Advisory Committee (BAC), etc," it added.
