India has achieved a significant milestone by achieving the National Health Policy (NHP) target for Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR).

According to a special bulletin issued by the Office of the Registrar General of India, the maternal mortality rate has come down from 130 per lakh live births in 2014-16 to 97 per lakh live births in 2018-20. As per the data, Assam has the highest maternal mortality rate (MMR) at 195, while Kerala has the lowest at 19 per lakh live births.

India's MMR has further improved by 6 points and now stands at 97/lakh live births. Maternal mortality ratio (MMR) is defined as the number of maternal deaths during a given time period per 100,000 live births.

As per data from the Sample Registration System (SRS), the country has seen a progressive reduction in MMR to 130 in 2014-2016, 122 in 2015-17, 113 in 2016-18, 103 in 2017-19 and 97 in 2017-19 . 2018-20, respectively.

Upon achieving this, India has met the National Health Policy (NHP) target for an MMR of less than 100/lakh live births and is on course to achieve the SDG target of an MMR of less than 70/lakh live births by 2030. is on the way, stated the Ministry of Health.

Assam, which has the highest MMR, is followed by Madhya Pradesh at 173 per lakh live births and Uttar Pradesh at 167, according to the Special Bulletin on Maternal Mortality Rate in India 2018-20.

The data shows that Kerala has the lowest MMR, followed by Maharashtra at 33 and Telangana at 43.

Target 3.1 of the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations aims to reduce the global maternal mortality rate to less than 70 per 100,000 live births.

The Office of the Registrar General of India, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is giving estimates on fertility and mortality using the Sample Registration System, in addition to counting the population in the country and monitoring the implementation of the Birth and Death Registration Act. ,
