Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Tuesday address rallies as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) election campaign in Gujarat's Morbi district, where a bridge tragedy took place last month that claimed over 140 lives.

After Morbi, the Prime Minister will also hold public meetings in Somnath, Bhavnagar and Navsari today. Gujarat is the strongest stronghold of the BJP as the saffron party has been ruling the state for the last 27 years.

On Monday, PM Modi addressed four public meetings at Anjar in Kutch, Gordhanpur in Jamnagar, Palitana in Bhavnagar, Gordhanpur in Jamnagar and Rajkot.

During his rally in Jamnagar yesterday, PM Modi received an enthusiastic response from people in Surat, where the crowd also lit flashlights of their mobile phones. He urged the people to ensure BJP's victory in the Gujarat assembly elections.

“I am here with you not as Prime Minister Modi but as your brother Modi. I have come here to meet you,” said the Prime Minister.

With the first phase of Gujarat assembly elections nearing completion, parties are putting forward their heavyweights to attract voters.

This time, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and CR Patil, the party is aiming to exceed its highest seat count of 140.

In the 2017 Gujarat elections, the BJP won 99 of the total 182 seats. The party has been in power for the last 27 years.

The state has long been a BJP bastion and the party is eyeing a return to power for a seventh term. Modi has been the longest serving Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014.

Assembly elections in Gujarat are to be held in two phases on December 1 and December 5, the results of which will be declared on December 8.
