GRAP Phase 1, 2 measures in Delhi-NCR, no need for Phase 3: Air quality panel

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Monday directed the authorities to lift the restrictions implemented in Delhi-NCR under the third phase of GRAP.

The Centre's air quality panel on Friday said the ongoing anti-pollution works under Phase I and II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR will continue.

In light of the fact that the air quality of the National Capital Region has shown improvement, the Centre's air quality panel on Friday said that the ongoing anti-pollution measures under Phase I and II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) will continue. Curbs are not required in Delhi-NCR and currently under Phase III.

The ban on construction and demolition activities, with the exception of essential projects imposed in Delhi-NCR under Phase III of GRAP, was ordered to be lifted by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Monday.

On Wednesday, the subcommittee met to assess the status of local air quality and the initiatives being taken to introduce anti-pollution restrictions under GRAP. In a statement, the CAQM said, the panel decided that "the ongoing actions under Phases I and II of GRAP will continue and there does not seem to be a need to implement Phase III of GRAP at this stage".

"As per the dynamical models and weather/meteorological forecasts provided by the India Meteorological Department/Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, the overall air quality is between the lower end of 'poor' and 'very poor' on a large scale," the statement said. Fluctuations are likely over the ranges over the next few days. The predominant surface wind is predicted to move from the north/northwest direction."

On Wednesday, the overall air quality index (AQI) for Delhi stood at 289 points. There has been a slight deterioration in the air quality in Delhi, but a significant increase in pollution levels is not expected in the near future.

An AQI between 201 and 300 is considered "poor", 301 to 400 "very poor", and 401 to 500 "severe".

Stage 1 of GRAP is activated when the AQI is in the 'poor' range (201 to 300), stage 2 is when it is in the 'very poor' range (301-400), stage 3 is when The AQI is in the 'severe' category. ' range (401-450) and finally stage 4 occurs when it rises to the 'severe+' range (greater than 450).
