G20 Summit: PM Modi calls for diplomatic solution to Ukraine war

 


After being held virtually in 2020 with Saudi Arabia as chair, it will be held in person this year and simultaneously online and offline in 2021, with Italy serving as chair.


Speaking at the 17th Group of 20 (G20) summit in the city of Bali, Prime Minister Modi began his speech by stressing on the path of ceasefire and diplomacy to end the war in Ukraine.


"I have said time and time again that we must find a way for a ceasefire in Ukraine and return to the path of diplomacy," he said.


"In the last century, WWII wreaked havoc on the world. After that the leaders of that time made a serious effort to pursue the path of peace. Now it is our turn", he added.


He also told the summit members how India is promoting natural farming for sustainable food security and re-popularizing nutritious and traditional food grains like millets.


He urged everyone to celebrate the International Year of Millets with great enthusiasm in the coming year.


According to PM Modi, climate change, Covid pandemic and developments in Ukraine have wreaked havoc in the world.


“The global supply chain has been devastated. There is a crisis on the supply of essential goods, essential goods all over the world. The challenge is more serious for the poorer citizens of every country", he said.


Concluding his speech, he explained how India's energy security is also important for global development.


"We must not encourage any kind of restriction on energy supply. And ensure stability in the energy market. India is committed to clean energy and the environment. By 2030, half of our electricity will be generated from renewable sources", he said. .


For the 17th Group of 20 summit, world leaders including President Joe Biden of the United States and President Xi Jinping of China have gathered in Indonesia.


The two-day summit, which begins today, focuses on topics such as global economic recovery, global health infrastructure, digital transformation, sustainable energy transition and climate change, among others, and has the theme "Get well together, stronger be."

He added that a "climate solidarity pact" is beneficial to achieving the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement, calling climate change the "defining challenge" of our time. "The climate solidarity pact could be made or broken by G20 leaders," he said.


In his departure statement, PM Modi had said that he would hold in-depth discussions with other G20 leaders on important global concerns such as global growth, food and energy security, environment, health and reviving digital transformation.


"On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, I will meet leaders of several other participating countries and review with them the progress in India's bilateral relations," he said.


At the G20 Summit in Indonesia, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with world leaders to inform them about India's changing G20 priorities.

This G20 summit is particularly special as India will chair the G20 summit on December 1, 2022 and the chairmanship will be handed over during the summit in Bali.

The G20 is the most important forum for international economic cooperation. It is important for shaping and strengthening global governance on all major international economic and development issues.


PM Modi will participate in three working sessions at the level of leaders during the two-day Bali summit. These include a session on digital transformation, a session on food and energy security and a session on health.
