Electric vehicles will be as economical as petrol cars next year: Nitin Gadkari

Nitin Gadkari has said that electric vehicles (EVs) will become as cheap as petrol vehicles next year. The Union Minister for Roads, Transport and Highways made this statement while announcing the government plans to re-run buses across the country at an event on November 1.

According to Gadkari, the number of electric vehicles sold in India has increased by 800% across all vehicle categories. In India, around 17 lakh electric vehicles were registered in 2022. There are 1.5 lakh transport buses in India, of which 93% run on diesel and many are old and unsuitable. The Union Minister said that the government is planning to convert all these buses to electric to achieve the target of zero emission.

Gadkari said a process has been initiated to produce hydrogen-powered cars in India in the near future. Three processes – black hydrogen, brown hydrogen and green hydrogen – are currently used to make hydrogen. You need coal to make black hydrogen; To make brown hydrogen you need petrol and to make green hydrogen you need water.


According to Gadkari, to increase tourism in India, the government intends to expand the number of double-decker buses. The minister, while speaking at the Zee Auto Awards 2022, also said that the government plans to reduce the cost of tickets for AC double-decker buses to make it more affordable for the general public.

As per the previous statement of the Union Minister, from Nagpur to Pune, the travel time of the passengers will be reduced to eight hours. The Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Highway will be connected with the newly launched Pune-Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) Access Control Green Expressway at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to reduce the hassles faced by commuters now traveling from Nagpur to Pune.

In a series of tweets, Gadkari said that the road will be undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for construction along an entirely new alignment. The journey from Nagpur to Pune by road currently takes around 14 hours.

As a result, it will be able to travel from Pune to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) via Samruddhi Mahamarg in two-and-a-half hours and from Nagpur to the same destination in five-and-a-half hours, the minister said.
