Chennai rain: School holiday declared in seven districts today

 


Chennai: Rescue operations are underway after an MTC bus got stuck in a waterlogged underpass following heavy rains in the city.

Heavy rain continued in Chennai on Wednesday as well. Due to heavy rains on November 2, school holidays have been declared in seven districts. The districts where schools are closed today include Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, Ranipet, Villupuram and Vellore.

Yesterday, Chennai recorded 8.4 cm of rain, making it the southern city's highest rainfall in 30 years.

Incessant rains in the city have flooded the roads, causing severe water logging and traffic jams. As a result, the condition has disrupted the normal functioning of life and people have to struggle to walk on the streets in knee-deep water.

Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday chaired a virtual meeting of top officials on monsoon preparedness and directed officials to work unitedly and directed them to take prompt action on complaints.

So far two people have died in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu. One person was electrocuted in the city, while a woman was killed when part of a residential building collapsed in Pulianthope, the northern area of ​​the city. A cow was also electrocuted in the suburbs.

A weather bulletin said that a Cyclonic Circulation is persisting over North Sri Lanka and its adjoining low levels and a trough extends from this system to Southeast Arabian Sea. Northeasterly winds are continuing along North Tamil Nadu and adjoining coastal areas.

Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru said that 75 per cent storm water drain works in Chennai Corporation areas have been completed. Nehru said that many areas that were flooded in the past, such as the drainage work in midtown GN Chetty Road, have not been waterlogged.

Greater Chennai Corporation officials inspected several areas and said that there was no stagnation of rain water in view of the preparedness measures and storm water drainage work in areas like KK Nagar. Flood surveillance cameras have been installed by the authorities in the flood-hit areas. In view of the ongoing storm water drainage improvement work and the Chennai Metrorail Phase-II project, barricades have been put up in several sections of the roads.

According to weather forecast officials, most areas of Tamil Nadu Puducherry-Karaikal are likely to receive moderate rainfall for the next three days.

During the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places over other northern districts including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet and Vellore.
