This restaurant in Pune caters to people with disabilities; The aim is to promote equality

A restaurant in Pune has grabbed the attention of everyone on social media for its unique dining experience with a social message. The staff members of Terracin - Kitchen & Bar located on FC Road are all hearing and speech impaired. 


Another unique feature is how they interact with their customers. An Instagram video that went viral shows how to place an order with the help of sign language. The video shows how the menu card has sign language with each dish. To place an order, customers need to show the sign language of the dish they want to order. All the employees are specially trained by the owner Dr. Sapna Kapse. The restaurant's website describes the restaurant as a 'socially conscious movement' and how they seek to promote 'inclusivity' and 'equality'. 


They also believe in focusing on empowerment over employability. The restaurant uses innovative training backed with scientific knowledge. 


The website explains, “Our aim is to mainstream specially abled persons with unconventional skill development methods to give them a respectable platform.” 


From starters to desserts, the menu has all the options. According to the website, Terrasinne is set in a modern and elegant environment. This is an award winning kitchen and bar with unique features, serving authentic cuisine from around the world. 


“All of them are above 21 years of age and are farmer children from villages in Maharashtra and Karnataka. We are also getting organic food ingredients like bajra used in restaurants from these farmers,” says Dr Sonam Kapse, restaurant owner and owner of TerraCin from Cancer Genetics Super Specialty Surgeon. 


"Communication is very easy, like we're talking to kids using cues," Kapse said. 


It is the first restaurant in India to employ multi-disabled staff. In addition, he has also won the 'Hospitality with a Cause' award from the International Hospitality Council, London.
